Dean Travis celebrates diversity of GC Eucharist

Posted by Douglas Travis on July 5, 2012
I just attended the opening Eucharist for General Convention. What a wonderful experience! 1300 Episcopalians gathered to glorify God with superb liturgy and exquisite music. We heard a fine sermon by the Presiding Bishop, The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori. In the service we celebrated the lives, ministry, and witness of three great nineteenth century prophets, Walter Rauschenbusch, Washington Gladden, and Jacob Riis. Each was dedicated to the realization of the Kingdom of God in this world, and so each was devoted to various social justice causes – e.g., exposing corruption in the New York political system, establishing labor unions, and ending segregation.

What a joy to break bread with so many of my Episcopalian sisters and brothers, people of every color, many languages, and a plethora of diverging opinions on a variety of subjects all united in the one Body of Christ!
