We Heart Austin in July

T.J. and Annie Freeman enjoy Austin, even in the hot summer. Follow their We Heart Austin posts for their favorite places to hang out in this great city. T.J. has completed his second year towards an MDiv. They came to us from the Diocese of Indianapolis.
One of the great things about living in Austin is the food. Delicious, often locally sourced food abounds in this town. There will be plenty of food mentioned in the pages of this blog as we move forward, but today I want to write about one restaurant that I enjoy particularly.
In June and July I spent six weeks in Spain on pilgrimage, because of this I missed spending our anniversary with my wife. One of our, if not the, favorite restaurant not just in Austin, but anywhere, is Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill. So it was a pretty easy decision as to where we were going to grab dinner on our first night back together in Austin. Moonshine is just a short drive from campus, located at the corner of Red River and 3rd Street. The restaurant is located in an old German settlement; there are two large outdoor dining areas, two bar areas, a patio with comfy seating, and rocking chairs located on the front porch to enjoy while you wait to be called to your table.
Annie and I have never had a bad meal here. Our hands down favorite appetizer is the roast garlic bulbs, very simple and very delicious. Two garlic bulbs roasted and served with goat cheese, roasted red peppers, and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. Annie’s go to meal is the Texas Flat Iron Steak, while I tend to have something different on each trip. I will say though that this is the only restaurant I have ever ordered meatloaf, Buffalo Meatloaf: it is amazing, and the Molasses & Chile Cured Pork Chop is perhaps that best that I have ever had in my life. This trip I had the Cornflake Fried Chicken Salad and I was not disappointed.
For dessert we split the Fudge Stout Brownie, we could have shared it with two more people, but we enjoyed every spoonful. My personal favorite is the White Chocolate Bread Pudding, but Annie and I do not share similar feelings towards bread pudding. There is also a wonderful Peanut Butter Mousse Pie that can be the perfect end to a fine meal.
Moonshine also features a full service bar and expansive wine list. Annie really enjoys the Ruby Slipper Martini, though not right now since she is pregnant. They make a good Mint Julep and a delectable Manhattan. They have plenty of wines available by the glass, I was personally a bit disappointed to learn that they no longer carried a lovely Claret that I thoroughly enjoy, but they have a nice selection of Malbecs and Pinot Noirs if you are into red wines.
One of the best things about Moonshine though is that it is not just anniversary dinner affordable. The prices are mid-range and the atmosphere is such that you can enjoy a quiet evening for two, a meal with your parents when they are in town, or an evening out with friends.
Blessings…T.J. and Annie
