Cristi Chapman Advent Meditation
Each December, the stark contrast between modern culture and the Gospel’s distinctly counter-cultural message is particularly vivid. We are overwhelmed by messages claiming happiness and comfort are just one purchase away. Rather than trusting in the gift of Eternal goodness, the world tells us our identities and dignity are determined by and dependent on fleeting possessions.
Advent directly challenges our cultural habits by shedding light on empty notions the world promises us. Advent beckons us to discover another way forward. God could have chosen so many other ways to engage with us. God could have stayed home or decided to be absent altogether. Instead, God chose to meet us in a most unexpected way — clothed as a fellow human being. Advent encourages us to prepare for and receive that enduring gift.
How does the world entice you with empty notions this Advent season? This year, how might you discover a new way to embrace the gift of the Christ-child in the world and in one another?
Gracious One, give us courage to seek the Christ-child in our midst, trusting always in Your ever-present goodness. Amen.
