Advent Meditations- Wednesday, December 20

Psalm 119:49-72; 49, [53]; Zech. 3:1-10; Matt. 24:45-51; Rev. 4:1-8

In this day and age, our light of hope can seem to shine dimly in what can often feel like a darkening world. In this passage from Matthew, Jesus is describing for the disciples the work he desires them to undertake: to take charge over the other members of the household, that is, the other members of the body of Christ, and to feed them their allowance of food, spiritual food.
Like expectant mothers, we are to keep about our work, awaiting the “birth pangs” that signal the great transition which scripture assures us is coming. never knowing when the Son of Man will return, we are instructed and forewarned only to keep ready. The psalter reading reminds us of the Christian place as keepers of God’s commandments and followers of the Prince of Peace. The heart of this psalm speaks of loving God and one another, and remaining humble in our task.
We should also heed the call to lead the way for truth and righteousness, and to avoid the pitfalls of greed and arrogance, which is as true in our time as it was when the psalm originated. With the darkness and chaos of the world circling around us, the wise and faithful servants can turn to the Word, turn toward the support of their community, and not lose faith. “The earth, O Lord, is full of your steadfast love; teach me your statutes.”
God of all, be ever-present in our struggle to sustain faith and hope & strengthen us to keep ready to serve you in love.
