SUMMARY:Samuel T. Lloyd\, III to give Harvey Lecture
DESCRIPTION:  \nRector of Trinity Church in the City of Boston\, Samuel T. Lloyd\, III will deliver the 2014 Harvey Lecture on March 24th. His lecture\, titled “All Things New” will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Knapp Auditorium. There is no charge for the event and all are welcome. RSVP \nLive stream link \nFrom Dr. Lloyd regarding his lecture topic: “What a time to be in the church! Just about every certainty about who we are\, how we relate to the society around us\, how we worship and share our faith\, and what it means to be disciples is being questioned. This is the time of a new reformation in the church\, and the most challenging part is that no one is quite sure what this new church will look like.\nWhere is the Spirit leading us? This Lecture will scan the landscape\, ask some questions\, and offer some suggestions about where we might be going.” \nLloyd will preach at the Holy Eucharist in Christ Chapel earlier in the day at 11:45 a.m. \nDr. Lloyd’s March 2\, 2014 sermon \nKnown as one of this country’s finest preachers\, Lloyd served as dean of the Washington National Cathedral from 2005 – 2011\, before returning to Trinity Church\, where he had been rector for almost 12 years. \nIn his sermon last January at his institution as the 20th rector of Trinity Church\, Dr. Lloyd said “Newness is God’s hallmark…God’s brand. Newness is what God does.” Join us to hear what Dr. Lloyd has to say to us about “All Things New.” \nThe Harvey Lecture\, organized annually by seminarians\, honors the late Hudnall Harvey\, dean of Seminary of the Southwest from 1968 until his death in 1972. The lectureship serves as a living memorial to Dean Harvey’s ministry at the seminary. \nPlease let us know that you’re coming to the lecture. \n

SUMMARY:Certificate for youth ministry and Christian formation
DESCRIPTION:CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IN CHRISTIAN FORMATION \nNext session: January 20 – 24\, 2014 \nFaculty for the January 2014 session will be Dr. Scott Bader-Saye who will teach Money\, Boredom and Fear: Moral Formation and Youth Culture and the Rev. John Lewis who will teach Presenting Everyone Mature in Christ: New Testament Approaches to Moral Formation in the Modern World. \nRegistration is open now. \nFor more information about the program contact Jean McGraw\, Director of the Certificate Program\, at 843.442.2692\,  jean.mcgraw@ssw.edu. \nSTUDENT COMMENTS \n[The program] Gave me tools to work within the challenging environment of a parish church. \n[I received] a stronger vision of hope for our church as a whole. \nThis course was inspiring and renewing for my ministry. It gave me a much clearer understanding of some of the dynamics of leadership in my congregation. The liturgical formation was quite powerful. By the end of the week\, I had a much deeper understanding and appreciation for the Divine Service and had recovered much of my early joy as a Christian. \nI came away from the course energized and with renewed enthusiasm for what I do. \nIt was great to be right on campus\, and the food was absolutely fantastic! I felt quite cared for. \n\nDESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM \nThe Certificate Program in Christian Formation is designed to meet the needs of Christian educators and youth ministers\, who seek to deepen their understanding of the Christian theological tradition. Working in peer groups taught by seminary faculty\, students in the Certificate Program engage with scripture\, history\, ethics\, and practical theology in a sequence of four sessions on the campus of Seminary of the Southwest. Designed as continuing education for practitioners in the field of Christian Education\, the program empowers students to be more able ministers through strengthening their ability to speak the language of the Christian community in effective and creative ways. \nTHEOLOGICAL VISION \nThe theological vision for Christian formation is to assist Christians on their journey of faith. We explore how we as Christians can grow in the life of faith\, and how we can participate in the Holy Spirit’s transforming work. The Certificate Program invites the students from all denominational backgrounds to enrich their experience of the field in ways that are focused\, coherent\, and solidly grounded in Bible\, church history\, systematic theology\, ethics\, and practical theology.  The vision for the Certificate Program in Christian Formation brings together the rich and challenging experience of family\, children\, and youth ministry practitioners with focused theological reflection offered by our faculty. \nCURRICULUM \nThe theological vision above informs the learning objectives of the certificate program and its curriculum. First\, the certificate program is designed to build an informed faith; second\,to build a conversational faith that engages personal\, ecclesial\, spiritual\, and public life of a student; and third\, to build a practicing faith that equips a student for Christian practices of witnessing\, modeling\, and teaching that allows them (children\, youth and adults) to participate in the Body of Christ while pursuing the goals of growing in their faith in God in Christ\, and becoming instruments of God’s spreading of the Kingdom. \nThe Certificate Program in Christian Formation will take two years to complete.  Beginning in June 2012\, the program will meet twice a year\, once in June and once in January. Two courses will be offered at each session.  In order to graduate from the program\, students will take a total of eight courses in the following general areas: \n\nBiblical Studies\nHistorical and Theological Studies\nEthics\, Church and Society\nLiturgical and Pastoral Theology\n\nThe courses will be offered in a week-long format.  Some preparation will be required in advance of each session\, and students will receive clear guidance in what is required of them. At the conclusion of each session\, students will be asked to write a paper (around 1500 words) for each course.  That paper will be sent via e-mail to the instructor within three weeks from the day the instruction is over. \nRegister online \nFor more information about the program contact Jean McGraw\, Director of the Certificate Program\, at 843.442.2692\,  jean.mcgraw@ssw.edu. \n\nFacts about the Certificate Program \nClasses — Each course balances instruction\, discussion\, theological reflection\, practical ministry skills\, worship and spiritual formation. SUMMARY:Crossing the Border Conference
DESCRIPTION:Crossing the Border: The Miracles of God \nPresented through a partnership of Austin Seminary\, Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest\, and Seminary of the Southwest \nDate: Saturday\, November 9 \nTime: 9:00 am-5:00 pm \nRegistration fee:$15 \nRegister online at CrossingtheBorder \nIn this day of theological education\, Hispanic pastors and church leaders will explore the transformative power of the miracles of God as performed by Jesus Christ in the midst of meagerness and abundance\, the borderland of the Roman Empire and the Kin*dom of God. We will reflect on the significance of reenacting the miracles of God in the everyday struggles of Hispanic natives and new immigrants in the US borderlands. The miracles will be examined in light of the cultural and historical context of the Roman Empire to understand their transcendence as manifestations of the Kin*dom of God proclaimed by Jesus. \n  \nThere are two presenters at this workshop. Both presentations will be provided in Spanish. \nDr. Leticia Guardiola-Sáenz\, Assistant Professor of Christian Scriptures\, School of Theology and Ministry\, Seattle University \nBorn and raised in the borderlands of Mexico and the United States\, Dr. Leticia Guardiola-Sáenz uses her bicultural experience as interpretive lens to read the New Testament. Her academic and pedagogical interests are on contextual reading strategies such as postcolonial and cultural hermeneutics\, feminist and borderlander interpretations of the Gospels for today\, and cultural representations of Jesus as ministerial models. Guardiola-Sáenz has several publications that have appeared in various books and journals. Recently she co-edited the book The Peoples’ Companion to the Bible\, and is currently working on a feminist-cultural interpretation of The Letters of John\, for the Wisdom Bible Commentary series. A member of the American Baptist Churches USA\, she has been actively involved in ministry both in Mexico and the United States. Before joining the faculty at Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry in 2008\, she taught at the Drew University and Andover Newton Theological School. \nDr. Gregory Cuéllar\, Assistant Professor of Old Testament\, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary \nDr. Cuéllar joined the faculty of Austin Seminary as Assistant Professor of Old Testament in January 2012. He previously held adjunct teaching appointments at Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University and Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist\, and has also served as visiting professor of Old Testament at Seminario Metodista Juan Wesley in Monterrey\, Mexico. A native of Cuero\, Texas\, he earned a Bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University\, Kingsville; the Master of Divinity degree with a concentration in Biblical Languages from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth; and the Ph.D. in Biblical Interpretation/Hebrew Bible from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University. Dr. Cuéllar brings a passion for scripture and transmits a love for the church in his teachings. If he were not an Old Testament professor\, he would be pastoring at a Latino/a immigrant church somewhere in the urban United States. \nRegister online at CrossingtheBorder \n

SUMMARY:2013 Payne Lecture features Stephanie Spellers
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to attend the 2013 Payne Lecture and reception on February 7\, 2013. \nThe Rev. Canon Stephanie Spellers\, author and popular speaker\, will give the lecture at 7:00 p.m. \n“Of Babies and Bathwater: Navigating the Death of Establishment and the Rebirth of a Missional Episcopal Church” \nAnglicanism\, at its truest and best\, stretches one arm to embrace ancient catholic traditions and the other to embrace local contexts\, thus holding to its founding impulse “to keep the mean between the two extremes\, of too much stiffness in refusing\, and of too much easiness in admitting any variation from it.” How shall we keep these original commitments at a time of unprecedented change: mission contexts shifting overnight\, the church of the establishment crumbling before our eyes? What kind of leadership\, liturgical frameworks and pastoral care do we need to foster in order to keep the Anglican baby but pour in much-needed\, fresh bathwater? \nPlease RSVP here or by contacting Stacy Morales in the Dean’s office\, 512.439.0399 \n \nThe Reverend Canon Stephanie Spellers serves as the new Canon for Missional Vitality in the Diocese of Long Island\, catalyzing mission and ministry with the 146 Episcopal churches in Brooklyn\, Queens and Long Island. She is the author of Radical Welcome: Embracing God\, The Other and the Spirit of Transformation and founding priest for The Crossing community\, an emergent congregation based at the Cathedral of St. Paul in Boston. A popular speaker and consultant nationwide\, Canon Spellers is Chaplain to the House of Bishops and just completed a three-year term as co-chair for the Episcopal Church’s Standing Commission on Mission and Evangelism. She is a graduate of Harvard Divinity School and Episcopal Divinity School and — though she now calls Brooklyn home — she is proud to hail from a small town in Kentucky. See her work at www.churchpublishing.org/radicalwelcome.      \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nThe annual lecture series in February is hosted by the Board of Trustees of the seminary and is focused on mission\, congregational leadership\, evangelism\, or congregational development in honor of Bishop Claude Payne\, who led the Episcopal Diocese of Texas\, 1995 – 2003. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
