DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s life and work on the 50th anniversary of his assassination\, Seminary of the Southwest will be honoring and remembering Dr. King in our midday chapel service and will be offering a lunch-time discussion of King’s writings and influence. \nThe chapel service will begin at 11:45am in Christ Chapel on the campus of Seminary of the Southwest. Senior seminarian The Rev. Greg Warren will preach. \nDr. Scott Bader-Saye\, Academic Dean and Helen and Everett H. Jones Professor of Christian Ethics and Moral Theology\, noted\, “As we face ongoing racial tension and violence in our country\, we have to acknowledge that the work Dr. King began has not been completed.  It is up to us\, people of all colors\, to carry forward the legacy of Dr. King’s witness.  Here at the seminary we want to mark this anniversary as an opportunity to remember\, to reflect\, and to renew our commitment to peace.” \nFollowing the service\, Dr. Anthony Baker will lead a lunch time discussion on the influence of the writings of Dr. King. The discussion will be over two of Dr. King’s sermons\, ‘Remaining Awake through a Great Revolution’ (transcript and audio) and ‘Paul’s Letter to American Christians’ (transcript and audio). \nThe Very Rev. Cynthia Briggs Kittredge\, Dean and President\, added\, “By observing the fiftieth anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King\, Jr.  our community will remember his life and death in the light of our worship in Easter week. SUMMARY:2018 Harvey Lecture - Dr. Kristin Leslie
DESCRIPTION:The 2018 Harvey lecturer will be Dr. Kristin Leslie\, Professor of Pastoral Theology  and Care at Eden Theological Seminary. She will be delivering a talk titled: ‘Noisy Lament\, Noisy Believing: Sexual Assault in the time of #s’. \nThe lecture will be in the Weeks Campus Center beginning at 6:30pm on Monday\, April 9th. A desert reception and book signing will follow. \nDr. Leslie’s research has focused on intercultural pastoral theology; womanist and feminist pastoral counseling; pastoral theological implications of sexualized violence\, particularly on pastoral counseling issues for survivors of acquaintance rape; and ministry in higher education with young adults. She has taught many specialized courses on pastoral care and has led international travel seminars to Bosnia\, Croatia\, and Australia.  She has worked with chaplains in the U. S. Military on issues of sexualized and religious violence and religious intolerance. In 2005\, Dr. Leslie co-authored the report that brought to light the problem of Christian proselytizing at the Air Force Academy. In 2013\, she was awarded a Navy contract to train Navy\, Marines\, and Coast Guard chaplains on matters related to military sexual assault. \nDr. Leslie is the author of numerous essays\, including “Three Decades of Women Writing for their Lives” in Feminist and Womanist Pastoral Theology (Abington 1999)\, “Sexual Abuse” in The Dictionary of Scripture and Ethics (Baker\, 2011)\, “Spectrum of Pastoral Counseling” in the Encyclopedia of Religion and Psychology  (2013)\, as well as the book\, When Violence is No Stronger: Pastoral Counseling with Survivors of Acquaintance Rape (Fortress\, 2003).  She has prepared and presented journal articles and public lectures on pastoral care\, chaplaincy\, and spiritual care after rape. She occasionally is called on as a consultant for matters related to clergy misconduct\, religious intolerance\, and sexualized violence. \nAn ordained elder in the United Methodist Church\, she serves on the board of Care and Counseling\, a St. Louis-based pastoral counseling center and has served on several different governing boards for the denomination. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Harvey Lectures were conceived at Seminary of the Southwest as a way of honoring the late Dean Harvey\, who died unexpectedly in 1972\, after serving as the seminary’s Dean for just 5 years.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring Dean Harvey’s tenure\, following some institutional turbulence during the 1960’s\,  the seminary had begun rebuilding in terms of enrollment\, financial strength\, and earning back the trust of many dioceses through the church. \nThe seminary community established the Harvey Lectures\, an annual series that would be overseen by student leaders\, and that would address the relationship between pastoral leadership and contemporary issues confronting the church. \nOver the years\, these Lectures have become a lasting and vital resource for the seminary\, bringing important and diverse theological voices to our seminary campus.

DESCRIPTION:  \nSeminary of the Southwest and the Office of Latino Ministries present Theologizing latinamente: A conference on Latino Cultures\, Liturgies\, and Ethics. This conference is dedicated to scholarly discussion of Latinx Studies within and with reference to the Anglican/Episcopal context. \nJoin us in Austin this October as established and emerging scholars present research-based reflections on culture\, ritual\, the theo-politics of immigration\, history\, ecclesiology\, congregational practice\, critical race theory\, and gender and sexuality. We note that while conversations about Latino practice within the Episcopal context abound\, these remain on the anecdotal level. Existing opportunities for reflection and learning are often limited to traditional folkways\, liturgical practices\, introduction to institutional structures\, and bilingual proficiency. \nWith this conference\, we are looking to produce new research and new knowledge engaging the Latino Episcopal context. He married Dorothy Meade Claiborne\, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. T. Sterling Claiborne of Atlanta\, Georgia\, on June 1\, 1963. Mr. Duke has two sons\, Charles III\, born in 1965\, and Thomas\, born in 1967\, and nine grandchildren. Upon graduating from the Naval Academy and receiving his commission in the United States Air Force\, Mr. Duke entered pilot training and received his wings in September 1958. He served three years in Germany as a fighter interceptor pilot with the 526th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Ramstein Air Base. He was then assigned to MIT for a master’s degree. In 1964\, he entered the USAF Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base. He has logged 4\,147 hours flying time\, which includes 3\,632 hours in jet aircraft. \nCharlie Duke is an active motivational and inspirational speaker. As an entrepreneur\, business executive\, military officer\, and astronaut\, he brings to the speaker’s platform 40 years of experience. His speeches are entertaining\, informative\, and sprinkled with humor. He has appeared on numerous TV shows and spoken for hundreds of associations\, clubs\, organizations\, churches\, and schools all over the world. Melanie Jones is a womanist ethicist\, millennial preacher\, and intellectual activist. As an emergent scholar in theological education advocating for social transformation in the church\, classroom\, and global community\, Jones was quickly recruited to serve on the BRSG executive board. In her role as the BRSG director of social media and public outreach\, she has poised herself as a leading millennial voice with a global public platform teaching in lecture halls and preaching in pulpits across the globe and traveling to cities in North America\, Australia\, the Bahamas\, Bermuda\, Ghana\, New Zealand\, and the United Arab Emirates. Her extensive teaching experience ranges from undergraduate teaching to graduate and seminary teaching in both face-to-face and online courses in humanities\, theology\, ethics\, gender/sexuality studies and writing. She is a third-generation Baptist preacher and the youngest ordained clergywoman at South Suburban Missionary Baptist Church in Harvey\, IL\, where she serves as associate minister and leads the women’s ministry. Much of Walton’s scholarship is focused on evangelical Christianity and its relationship to mass media and political culture. His first book\, Watch This! The Ethics and Aesthetics of Black Televangelism (NYU Press\, 2009)\, examines the theological and political traditions of African American religious broadcasters. Walton is also an outspoken advocate for social justice and civil rights\, as well as a passionate voice in support of the marginalized. His work and insights have been featured in several national and international news outlets including The New York Times\, CNN\, and the BBC. Devotion to those social issues are prevalent in his writings\, media interviews\, speaking engagements and sermons. \nWalton’s latest book\, A Lens of Love: Reading the Bible in Its World for Our World (Westminster John Knox Press\, 2018)\, is an extension of his work from the pulpit and classroom. The book is the interpretative exploration of the Bible from the perspective of the most vulnerable and violated characters in scriptures. A Lens of Love is an aid for Christians who seek to be rooted in faith while pursuing professional lives that are just and ethical and challenge inequity.
