DESCRIPTION:Join us for lunch and a talk by Ora Houston at the next Monday Connection! \nMonday\, June 1\, 2026 \n11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. \nWeeks Center \nRSVP below by May 26\, 2026 \n\n \n  \nOra Houston\, daughter of O.H. Elliott and Thelma M. Elliott\, was born in Rome\, GA.\, and has lived in east Austin for most of her life. She attended Blackshear Elementary School\, Kealing Jr. High School\, the ‘old’ L.C. Anderson High School\, and received her Bachelor of Arts in psychology and sociology from Huston-Tillotson University—all in Austin’s newly-defined District 1. \nHouston’s father graduated from the University of Kansas in 1933. Her mother was one of the first women of African descent to graduate from the School of Social Work at the University of Texas. Houston credits her parents with instilling in her the desire to serve her community and to engage in social and civic activism. \nHouston’s long professional history of service-oriented work includes 27 years with the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation and\, prior to that\, 2 years as a caseworker with Child Protective Services and Austin-Travis County MHMR. After retirement\, Houston worked in the office of Texas Senator Gonzalo Barrientos from 1999 to 2003. \nHouston was the first Austin city council representative for Austin’s District 1\, serving from 2015 to 2019. District 1\, along with 9 other districts\, was created by the Citizens Districting 10-1 plan. Houston was a founding member and leader of Austinites for Geographic Representation\, the group that secured geographic representation in the Austin city government through a citizens’ petition and initiative. \nHouston has participated in many local organizations and commissions. She was a member of the Citizens Advisory Task Force of the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan and a member of the collaborative council of the Travis County Model Court for Children and Families. Houston was vice chair of the Upper Boggy Creek Neighborhood Planning Team and part of the Disproportionality Committee of Family and Protective Services. She is an active member of St. James’ Episcopal Church—an inclusive\, multicultural\, multilingual congregation. \nHouston has received a number of awards in recognition of her community involvement\, including the Pioneer Spirit Award\, Outstanding Women in Texas Government (1998;) Public Citizen of the Year\, Texas Chapter\, National Association of Social Workers (2009;) Outstanding Civic Engagement\, Austin Branch\, NAACP (2011)\, and outstanding alumni\, Huston-Tillotson International Alumni Association (2012.) \nHouston lives in the home her parents built in 1954 on East 22nd. When she isn’t volunteering or doing advocacy work\, Houston enjoys caring for her plants and birdwatching. She is the proud parent of two adult children\, Askia Shomari and Gina Houston.

SUMMARY:2026 Matriculation and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in Christ Chapel on Sunday\, August 23\, 2026\, at 5pm for Southwest’s annual Matriculation service\, where new students are welcomed and begin their important journey of learning and formation. At the service\, incoming students will add their names to the same Matriculation Book that so many alumni have signed\, and become a part of the tradition at Southwest that stretches back for decades. \nAlso\, at the service\, Southwest will award the Charles Cook Servant Leadership Award. The Cook Award was created in 2009 by the faculty to honor their colleague and Seminary of the Southwest alum\, the Rev. Charlie Cook\, on the occasion of his retirement from the seminary. Each fall\, as another academic year begins\, the community pauses to remember this common calling we have and to honor someone who especially embodies the Christian commitment to selfless service on behalf of others. \nThe service will be live-streamed at the seminary website and facebook page.
