SUMMARY:Men and Emotions: Overcoming Stigma—Fostering Healthy Emotional Expression
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Seminary of the Southwest’s Loise Henderson Wessendorff Center for Counseling and Spirituality\, this Continuing Education Unit (CEU) workshop explores the often-overlooked challenges that men face in understanding\, identifying\, and expressing their emotions. Designed for professionals in mental health\, education\, and other helping fields\, this session will provide valuable insights and strategies into the unique barriers that men encounter regarding emotional health.  \nWith Laura Jones Swann\, and guest speakers Irek B. and Juan G. \nDetails: \nFriday\, March 28\, 2025 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. \nWeeks Center at Seminary of the Southwest\n501 East 32nd Street\nAustin\, TX 78705 \nClick here to Register\nObjectives: \nParticipants will: \n\nBe challenged to look at their own stereotypes and beliefs regarding men and emotions.\nGain a deeper understanding into the societal\, cultural\, and personal challenges men face in developing emotional awareness and expression.\nHave the opportunity to hear from men who have courageously explored their own emotional journey.\nLearn effective strategies to support and encourage healthy emotional expression. \nEngage in discussions and hear diverse perspectives on the role of emotional health in men’s overall well-being.\n\n \nLaura Jones Swann is a renowned expert in the field of emotional wellness\, with a passion for helping both men and women navigate the complexities of emotional expression. With 35 years of experience as a therapist and educator\, Laura has dedicated her career to breaking down barriers and fostering healthy emotional development. She is the author of the recently published book\, Men and Emotions . . . It’s a Thing\, which explores the challenges men face in understanding and expressing their emotions. Laura’s innovative approach combines research-based strategies with compassionate insight\, making her a leading voice in this transformative area of mental health.  \nSeveral key themes in Laura’s work are illustrated by the following content taken from her book as well as several reflections that are from a few of the men that are featured in her book:  \n“A key to understanding emotions is to learn how to lean into them without getting swallowed up by them.”  \n“It’s so weird when people think men don’t have feelings. Like . . . have you ever listened to music written by men? Clearly men have A LOT of emotions.” —Social media post  \n“I think about the very strong conservative culture that I grew up in that taught that men detach from their emotions. Then I think about how grateful I am for the progress I have made to leave that mindset and now more often acknowledge\, accept\, and appreciate my emotions and what they can teach me about myself and the way I relate to the world around me.” —anonymous \n“At 32 years old\, I am beginning to understand that my feelings are not something to be ignored but rather a source of insight into my inner workings. In the past they were (and still are at times) disregarded and unimportant to me. If I didn’t care about something I couldn’t be disappointed by the result. Forcing this detachment from my emotions produced a person who on the surface was mild\, calm\, and collected\, but under the surface I was a trembling mess of anxiety and fear.” —Evan \nClick here to Register

SUMMARY:2025 Matriculation and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in Christ Chapel on Sunday\, August 24\, 2025\, at 5pm for Southwest’s annual Matriculation service\, where new students are welcomed and begin their important journey of learning and formation. At the service\, incoming students will add their names to the same Matriculation Book that so many alumni have signed\, and become a part of the tradition at Southwest that stretches back for decades. \nAlso\, at the service\, Southwest will award the Charles Cook Servant Leadership Award to the Rev. Jim Harrington\, founder of the Texas Civil Rights Project and Missioner at St. James Episcopal Church. The Cook Award was created in 2009 by the faculty to honor their colleague and Seminary of the Southwest alum\, the Rev. Charlie Cook\, on the occasion of his retirement from the seminary. Each fall\, as another academic year begins\, the community pauses to remember this common calling we have and to honor someone who especially embodies the Christian commitment to selfless service on behalf of others. \nFurther\, this year’s Matriculation service will include the installation of the Rev. Sarah Faehnle Mast as Southwest’s new Dean of Chapel (read about the Rev. Mast’s appointment here)\, and the installation of the Rev. Benjamin King\, Ph.D. as Southwest’s Academic Dean (read about the Rev. King’s appointment here). \nThe Rev. Sarah Faehnle Mast will officiate\, and the Rev. Benjamin King\, Ph.D. will preach at the service. \nThe service will be livestreamed at the seminary website and facebook page. Please feel free to forward these links to family or friends who may be interested but cannot attend. \nFollowing the service\, please join us for a celebratory reception in Howell Dining Hall. \nPlease RSVP here.\nWe look forward to celebrating with you.

SUMMARY:Black History Month 2026
DESCRIPTION:Southwest created an Austin Community Engagement Guide for Black History Month with information on local Black-owned businesses\, events in Austin\, and history about Black History Month. Check it out here.\nEvents: \nBlack History Month Keynote and Reception – Wednesday\, February 4th at Seminary of the Southwest\n6:30pm Keynote Address in Knapp Auditorium \n8:00pm Dessert Reception in Dining Hall (next to Knapp Auditorium) \nFeaturing keynote speaker\, Chas Moore\, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of the Austin Justice Coalition. \nChas Moore is a nationally respected organizer\, speaker\, and visionary leader working at the intersection of justice\, abolition\, and Black liberation. As the Organizing Director of the Austin Justice Coalition (AJC)—an advocacy organization he founded—Chas continues to lead transformative grassroots efforts that center the lives and experiences of Black\, Indigenous\, and other marginalized communities impacted by systemic oppression. \nUnder Chas’s leadership\, AJC has redefined public safety in Austin\, successfully advocating for a historic $150 million reallocation from the Austin Police Department to fund community-first alternatives. He was instrumental in reshaping the city’s Use of Force policy and led a community-powered campaign to defeat a harmful police union contract. His work consistently challenges the status quo\, proving that bold\, unapologetic organizing rooted in love and accountability can shift both policy and culture. \nNo longer serving as Executive Director\, Chas now focuses on deep movement-building strategies\, political education\, and base-building across Texas and beyond. He has helped launch initiatives such as the Justice Access Support Initiative (JASI)\, connecting individuals to legal support grounded in equity\, and continues to be a national thought leader through platforms like TEDx\, CBS Austin\, and faith-based partnerships like Violet Crown City Church. \nA recipient of the Nathan Cummings Foundation Fellowship and a member of the Unlocked Futures Cohort backed by John Legend\, Chas’ influence is recognized far and wide. Yet\, he remains grounded in community—organizing town halls\, Black-out nights at local theaters\, and Black Food Week to support Black-owned businesses. \nWith a style that blends radical truth-telling and deep care\, Chas Moore invites us to not just imagine a liberated future but to co-create it—together\, from the ground up. \nPlease RSVP for the Keynote and Reception here.\nMardi Gras Celebration – Tuesday\, February 17th from 6:30-8:00pm at Seminary of the Southwest\n6:30pm Welcome and music from the Duane Carter Band in Howell Dining Hall \n7:00-8:00pm Dinner featuring local food truck\, Mama Jambalayas \nAll are welcome to attend this celebration! \nPlease RSVP for the Mardi Gras Celebration here.\nFeast of Pauli Murray Eucharist and Reception – Thursday\, February 19th at 5:30pm at Seminary of the Southwest\nRSVP and find out more about this event here.\nAffiliated events: \nHuston-Tillotson University’s Opening Black History Month Chapel Service – Tuesday\, February 5th at 11am at Huston-Tillotson University\nFind out more here. \nCelebrate Black Austin walking tour with alum\, Jane Obi and partner Bryan Edwards of Third Spaces – Saturday\, February 28th\nOn Saturday\, February 28\, Third Spaces\, will be hosting our 5th Annual Celebrate Black ATX Block Party.  You are invited to join us in East Austin as we honor 100 years of Celebrating Black history. \n\nEvent Itinerary\n\n10:45 AM – 12:30 PM: FREE East Austin History Tour \n1:00 PM – 6:00 PM Block Party \n All Day Activations \n Vendor Marketplace – Support Black-owned businesses & artisans \n Food Trucks \n Live Music & DJ Sets \n\nRSVP HERE
