SUMMARY:2016 Harvey Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The 2016 Harvey Lecture\, “Good News for a Change: Creative Collaboration in Context\,” will be given by Father William “Bill” Miller\, a noted preacher\, teacher\, speaker and author. He began his ministry in 1986 as the Director of Youth Ministries at the Church of St. John the Divine in Houston\, and has served as Rector of St. James Church in Austin\, Trinity Church in Midtown Houston\, and St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church on the island of Kauai. Each church experienced significant growth in ministry and membership during Father Bill’s tenure. In June of 2015 he became Rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Covington\, Louisiana\, near New Orleans. Christ Church has embraced a new model of four distinct worship services with a variety of music\, and has grown significantly in just a few months. \nFather Bill has founded four jazz festivals in the sacred context and has collaborated with musicians to create many different jazz\, blues and gospel masses. He is the author of two popular books\, The Gospel According to Sam: Animal Stories for the Soul (Seabury: New York) andThe Beer Drinker’s Guide to God: The Whole and Holy Truth About Lager\, Loving and Living (Howard Books/Simon and Schuster). He is presently working on two books\, one on congregational development and another with the theme of balance and wholeness. \nThe Harvey Lectures were conceived at Seminary of the Southwest as a way of honoring the late Dean Hudnall Harvey\, who died unexpectedly in 1972\, after serving as the seminary’s Dean for just 5 years. During Dean Harvey’s tenure\, the seminary increased enrollment\, strengthened financial health\, and earned the trust of many dioceses throughout the church. The seminary community established the Harvey Lectures\, an annual series that would be overseen by student leaders\, to address the relationship between pastoral leadership and contemporary issues confronting the church. \nThe lecture will begin at 7:00 and a reception will follow. \n2016 Harvey Lecture Participation Certificate (pdf)

DESCRIPTION:The annual Matriculation service of Evensong will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday\, August 28\, 2016\, in Christ Chapel on the seminary campus. \nThis fall we will welcome 43 new students entering Seminary of the Southwest for their leadership formation for lay and ordained ministry. Dean and President Cynthia Briggs Kittredge will preside and Academic Dean Scott Bader-Saye will preach at the service of Evensong. \nThe seminary will officially welcome its newest faculty members\, Dr. Awa Jangha and the Rev. Danielle Hansen\, PhD. Both joined the seminary faculty this summer. \nDr. Hansen is Assistant Professor of Pastoral Theology and serves as Director of Field Education. Prior to arriving at Seminary of the Southwest\, she was a lecturer at Yale and Tufts Universities in addition to serving as chaplain at Groton School and as a parish priest in Lexington\, Lincoln\, and Quincy\, Massachusetts. \nDr. Jangha is Assistant Professor of Counselor Education for the seminary’s master in clinical mental health counseling degree. She earned a PhD from Loyola University Maryland in Pastoral Counseling (a Counselor Education and Supervision program). Her research focuses on experiences of power in the pastoral counseling identity development of African-American female pastoral counselors in training and utilizes art as the means of exploration. \nThe Cook Award in Servant Leadership\, named for Faculty Emeritus Charles J. Cook\, is presented at Matriculation and will be awarded this year to Jill Oettinger\, CEO of Good Samaritan Community Services in San Antonio. Good Samaritan\, founded in 1951 by the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas is now a private\, nonprofit organization and United Way agency that provides community services to lessen the impact of poverty in South Texas. Ms. Oettinger served on the board of Good Samaritan before leading the organization as CEO\, a position she has held since 1996. \nFollowing the service\, a reception will be held in the Weeks Center. Dusty was dean of Seminary of the Southwest from 1984 to 2002. For all the successes of his Deanship—the successful completion of two major capital campaigns\, the building of much needed facilities\, continuing increases in enrollment\, the establishment of new degree and certificate programs for laity and clergy\, and significant growth in the endowment—we remember him especially for his dedication to teaching. This award is presented each year to an educator selected by the faculty of the seminary\, who has exhibited pedagogical excellence in his or her field. \nThe Rev. Hal Brook Perry joined the Seminary of the Southwest faculty in 1972 – two years after graduating from this seminary. He served the seminary community as assistant dean\, registrar and instructor in church history and liturgics until his death in 1991. In a sermon he gave in Christ Chapel\, he noted that a seminary was a special place where “we could be at once a questioning and unifying force. We should be able to stand apart from government\, business and all the rest and bring the judgment of our tradition on society – but at the same time be in the world\, and suffering with it.” The Hal Brook Perry Distinguished Alumni Award\, conferred by the Alumni Association\, is offered in recognition of the exceptional ministries rendered to churches\, communities\, and the Church worldwide by the alumni of Seminary of the Southwest. \n2:00 PM – Closing Lecture\, “Toward the Stewardship of Incarnation” by the Rev. Dr. Margaret Aymer (Session 5)\nMargaret Aymer joined the faculty of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 2015 from Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta\, Georgia\, where she had been associate professor of New Testament since 2004. She teaches core courses on the Introduction to the New Testament\, Exegesis\, and Greek and elective courses in numerous disciplines including African Americans and the Bible\, and feminist and womanist biblical interpretation. Professor Aymer wrote Confessing the Beatitudes\, the 2011 Horizons Bible Study (the annual Bible study resource for Presbyterian women)\, for which she won the Award of Excellence by the Associated Church Press. Dr. Aymer has published James: Diaspora Rhetoric of a Friend of God (Sheffield Publishing\, 2014). A desert reception will follow. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Harvey Lectures were conceived at Seminary of the Southwest as a way of honoring the late Dean Harvey\, who died unexpectedly in 1972\, after serving as the seminary’s Dean for just 5 years.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring Dean Harvey’s tenure\, following some institutional turbulence during the 1960’s\,  the seminary had begun rebuilding in terms of enrollment\, financial strength\, and earning back the trust of many diocese through the church. \nThe seminary community established the Harvey Lectures\, an annual series that would be overseen by student leaders\, and that would address the relationship between pastoral leadership and contemporary issues confronting the church. \nOver the years\, these Lectures have become a lasting and vital resource for the seminary\, bringing important and diverse theological voices to our seminary campus. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAttendees- download your Continuing Education Participation certificate here: \n\n	2017-Harvey-Lecture-Participation-Certificate_Lecturer_The-Rev.-Kim-Jackson_3_27_17.pdf\n\n
