John Hines Professor of Preaching

SEMINARY OF THE SOUTHWEST invites applicants for the John Hines Professor of Preaching, a full-time, open rank position to begin fall of 2021. A seminary of the Episcopal Church located in Austin, TX, Southwest prepares leaders for lay and ordained service within and outside the church. The seminary offers degrees in divinity, religion, clinical mental health counseling, and spiritual formation. It also houses special programs in Latinx studies and chaplaincy (healthcare, military, and school).
The successful candidate will teach required and elective courses in preaching and will work in a secondary area such as liturgical leadership, congregational development, Christian education, field education, or spirituality. The position requires full participation in the academic, pastoral, and communal life of the seminary and includes student advising, liturgical, and committee responsibilities. Demonstrated teaching ability, excellence in preaching and teaching, familiarity with the Anglican/Episcopal tradition, and a demonstrated commitment to the Church’s ministry are essential. A person of lively faith, the appointee will have a passion for the formation of Christians in a variety of vocations and across a diversity of contemporary ecclesial contexts. The seminary values a collegial working style and encourages interdisciplinary conversation, team teaching, and shared administrative leadership. The following experiences and credentials are preferred:
- Ordination in the Episcopal Church or another church with which it shares full communion
- A Ph.D. or D.Min. in homiletics, preaching, liturgics, practical theology, or a related theological field
- Experience in pastoral ministry.
The John Hines Chair in Preaching is endowed in memory of Bishop Hines, the seminary’s founder and Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, who encouraged preaching that was both sacramental and prophetic: edifying the Church in its mission and advocating for God’s justice.
