This July, Austin, TX, hometown of Seminary of the Southwest since 1952, will host the 79th General Convention of the Episcopal Church. In accordance with Southwest’s first core value of Hospitality, a generous offering of events and resources will be provided by Seminary of the Southwest. They include:
Alumni Fireworks Viewing Party
Wednesday, July 4th is the day before the first official day of General Convention, so please join us at Good Shepherd on the Hill, who have generously invited us to co-host their fireworks viewing party from their perfectly situated campus not far from the convention center. Enjoy food from Abundant Harvest, a ministry run by alumnus The Rev. Sean Steele, and other surprises. Transportation will be provided.
Sunday Brunch at Southwest
On Sunday, July 8th, Southwest will host a morning Eucharist at Christ Chapel, followed by a brunch, to allow convention attendees an opportunity to experience our serene campus and enjoy fellowship. Just 3 miles from the convention center, a visit to Southwest may just be the General Convention midway break you need on Sunday morning.
On Tuesday, July 10th, Southwest will invite alumni/ae to gather downtown near the convention center for a chance to reunite with students, faculty and other friends. Dean Kittredge will speak about the state of the seminary and the vision for the future.
The Southwest ‘Doing Austin Right’ Guide
Southwest is creating the ‘Doing Austin Right’ guide, a not-so-typical visitor guide, geared especially for our friends visiting for General Convention.
The guide will be filled with ‘insider’ recommendations for:
- Places to eat and drink
- Places for worship, rejuvenation, reflection, and meditation
- Outdoor activity areas
- Popular sightseeing and tourist spots
- Art, music, and culture venues
The content of this guide will be provided entirely by the alumni/ae, students, faculty and staff of Seminary of the Southwest! It will be shared on the General Convention website for all attendees, so be sure your voice is heard! Please save the date for each of these events and consider a submission to our visitor guide.
A formal invitation with more details and the chance to RSVP for each event will be sent in the next month.
Finally, plan to visit Seminary of the Southwest’s booth in the exhibit hall throughout the convention. It will be a gathering place for everyone connected to or interested in Southwest, and will be chance to connect with current seminarians and faculty.
