Wellness for ministry focuses on spiritual practices

Spiritual practice is the focus of the Comprehensive Wellness for Ministry programming at Southwest this spring. Students will have a variety of opportunities to enrich their spiritual practice as part of their Rule of Life in preparation for ministry.
Brother Curtis Almquist, former superior of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist, will be on the seminary campus on February 29 – March 1 for reflections on “a contemplative grounding for praying your life.”
Mystics Lectures are scheduled during the lunch hour on Wednesdays, March 2, March 9, April 13 and April 20. Presented by seminary faculty and guest, Cecilia Miller from Wesleyan University, the lectures will address Mysticism as a Theological Challenge, Overview of Mysticism, Jesus as a Mystic, and Saint Teresa of Avila: A Spanish Mystic.
The Heart of Texas Chapter of Contemplative Outreach will hold the 24th Annual United in Prayer Day at Seminary of the Southwest on March 19th. The day’s program includes centering prayers periods and a recorded message from Father Thomas Keating.
Each semester, the seminary community focuses on one of the four areas of Comprehensive Wellness–financial, physical, spiritual and vocational–engaging in a process of action and reflection intended to help each person refine his or her personal Rule of Life.
The Rev. Micah Jackson, director of Comprehensive Wellness, explains: “The priests, scholars, counselors, chaplains and spiritual directors who graduate from our seminary are embarking upon vocations which are demanding in many ways. Comprehensive Wellness for Ministry is a program designed to support our graduates in the transition to their early ministries, and also set them up to be successful in their vocations for many years to follow.”
