Crossing the Border, the semi-annual conference co-sponsored by Hispanic Church Studies at Seminary of the Southwest, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and the Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest provides continuing education for Spanish-speaking clergy and laity.
The next Crossing the Border conference will be held on November 15, 2014 at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. The title of that conference is: Cruzando la Frontera: Ministerio Juvenil (Crossing the Border: Youth Ministry).
The Rev. Al Rodriguez, Southwest alumnus and adjunct faculty, and the Rev. Elizabeth Tamez Mendez will be the presenters at the November 15 conference which qualifies for 5 Continuing Education Units (2.5 –professional, 2.5 academic/theological) for clergy of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas.
Conference details and online registration
Twenty people attended the conference at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas on March 22, 2014. Members from Christ Church Cathedral in Houston attended the event, along with Lutherans, Presbyterians, and members of the Metropolitan Community Church.
The keynote speaker was the Rev. Dr. Cristian De La Rosa, clinical assistant professor of Contextual Theology and Practice, and director of Contextual Education and Community Partnerships at Boston University School of Theology. Dr. De La Rosa’s theme, "Crossing the Border with Jesus," addressed the faith practices of immigrants who cross the border from Mexico to the United States and the nature of borders.
The afternoon speaker was Rev. Dr. Gregory Cuellar, assistant professor of Old Testament at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He spoke on the history of inter-ethnic relations between persons of Mexican descent and Anglo-Americans in South Texas.
