The 2017 Blandy Lecture and Alumni Convocation concluded this past September with attendees excited about the keynote message Bishop Rob Wright, Diocese of Atlanta, delivered on leadership. “Leadership is the capacity to mobilize people to address tough problems,” said Bishop Wright. “Especially the problems they would rather avoid.” The well-attended convocation also provided several hours of continuing education opportunities taught by Southwest faculty. Continuing education topics this year centered on the Christian Perspective on Money and Spiritual Health and Well-Being.

Cynthia Briggs Kittredge, Dean and President, “The expanded continuing education offerings on Spiritual Health and on Christian Perspective on Money highlighted the seminary’s excellent faculty. Returning alums told me they enjoyed “being back in class.” Bishop Wright’s spirited lectures challenged leaders to follow the example of Jesus and to lead into change and loss with faith in the goodness of God. His engagement of leadership literature and scripture excited graduates and current students.”
The McDonald teaching award was presented to Kay Mijangos for her dedicated work building St. Paul’s Episcopal Montessori School in San Antonio, TX.

This year marked the 50th anniversary of this annual gathering created to honor The Very Rev. Gray M. Blandy for his ministry and work as the first dean of the Seminary of the Southwest.
In 2018, the Blandy Lecture and Alumni Convocation will be moved to early November to coincide with other seminary events, including the annual Polity Bowl.
