John Hines Day Celebrates the Vision of Our Founder

On October 9, members of the Southwest community, the Board of Trustees, members of the Hines family, and the John Hines Legacy Society gathered on campus to celebrate the legacy and vision of the founder of Seminary of the Southwest, Bishop John Elbridge Hines. Bishop Hines’ vision of a seminary “for the whole church” was on full display as alums the Rev. Canon Kai Ryan and the Rev. Justin Lindstrom presided and preached, respectively, before a crowd that included students and trustees from XX different dioceses across The Episcopal Church. As has become tradition at Southwest, Lindstrom preached wearing Bishop Hines’ stole, provided by the Hines family.
The Rev. Lindstrom’s rousing sermon before a full Christ Chapel was followed by the installation of Shannon Hunter, Kurt Lyn, Kai Ryan, and Tim Saunders as incoming members of the Board of Trustees. Following the service in Christ Chapel, guests enjoyed fellowship at a seated luncheon in the Weeks Center.
“John Hines Day provides an important opportunity to reconnect to our past and to test ourselves against the plumb line of our founder’s vision,” said Dr. Scott Bader-Saye, acting dean and president. “Bishop Hines founded this seminary to be a place where the church’s faith and the world’s needs come together. We continue to carry on this vision and to enact a curious and hopeful engagement with the culture around us. This year we were privileged to hear the challenging words of our preacher, the Rev. Justin Lindstrom, and to welcome the Hines family back to this holy space.”
