Racial Healing Initiative

The purpose of the Racial Healing Initiative is to promote the practice of individual and collective racial healing as an integral part of the counseling work of mental health professionals and the pastoral work of church leadership. We envision a future in which communities within the Central Texas region can receive culturally-inclusive wellness care that acknowledges their unique needs and communal experiences.

With funding from the Moody Foundation, the Loise Henderson Wessendorff Center for Christian Ministry and Vocation at the Seminary of the Southwest launched the initiative under the leadership of Dr. Marlon Johnson (Project Director) and Rev. Javon Bracy (Program Assistant). This initiative included robust course design, leadership training, and formation of the pilot RHI Cohort: a collaborative group of mental health professionals and clergy seeking to promote change and growth through justice and action.

Our pilot cohort engaged in virtual and in-person learning sessions that moved participants from self-awareness to other-awareness, equipping them to address racial trauma and systemic oppression. Participants developed personal and group goals and strategies to address the harm that racism, sexism, classism, and religious oppression have done within their communities.

We invite you to join us for our Fall Learning Experience which will provide a snapshot of wellness and racial healing to a larger community of clergy and mental health professionals within the Central Texas region. Register here.
