For a third year, students in Seminary of the Southwest’s counseling program have been awarded the prestigious National Board for Certified Counselors Minority Fellowship Award for Master’s Mental Health Counselors. Rising seniors Elvira Marin and Berenice Soto were chosen as the 2024 fellows, following in the footsteps of 2023 graduate Kevin Overton-Hadnot, who won the award in 2022, and 2024 graduate Jane Obi, who won the award in 2023.
This year’s NBCC Foundation Bridging the Gap Symposium was held in Washington D.C. Kevin Overton-Hadnot and Dr. Marlon Johnson, Assistant Professor of Counselor Education, presented at the symposium.
Jane Obi shares, “This 5 day experience was full of networking, learning, and exploring D.C! Once again each symposium, I am reminded how wonderful our MHC program at SSW is. For example, I went to a presentation led by counselor educators that presented research on the effects of mindfulness on multicultural competence. The presenters found that practicing mindfulness at the beginning of class (ex: grounding meditation) can help students be more aware during class. At the end of this session, I shared with the audience how all my professors lead us in a guided meditation during class, and they were all impressed. How blessed are we (the students), to be trained and nurtured by such brilliant and incredible educators.”
