“This new publication by our entire counseling faculty displays both the academic excellence and the pedagogical creativity of our program,” said Dr. Scott Bader-Saye, dean and president. “The result of several years of intensive curriculum revision and assessment, this paper shows that we are setting the standard for incorporating antiracist pedagogy into counselor education. I am so proud of the work our faculty has done to infuse our core values of hospitality, respect, and mutuality into the curriculum in service of building beloved community.”

“It has been a deeply profound and transformative process to engage in the work of integrating antiracism, social justice, and advocacy across our counseling curriculum,” said Dr. Awa Jangha, the Loise Henderson Wessendorff Associate Professor of Spiritual Integration in Counseling. “The additional process of co-writing an article that shares our work over the past few years with a national audience has been quite special. It is rare for an entire department to collaborate on a publication and to do so with joy and strengthened collegiality.”

The MHC faculty are presenting the article at the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES) conference in Dallas, TX, on Friday November 8th, 2024. This conference occurs every 2 years and brings together the southern region of the professional organization for counselor educators (SACES).  “It is an honor to present the work we have been doing over the past few years to our guild,” said Dr. Jangha.

All six faculty members in the Southwest counseling program were co-authors on the article. they include:

  • Dr. Gena St. David , Director of the Loise Henderson Wessendorff Center for Counseling and Spirituality and Professor of Counselor Education
  • Dr. Awa Jangha , Loise Henderson Wessendorff Associate Professor of Spiritual Integration in Counseling
  • Dr. Stephanie Ramirez , Associate Professor of Counselor Education and Coordinator of the Latinx Counseling Concentration Program
