Opening Jubilee Celebration and Dinner

6pm: Worship in Christ Chapel, featuring Rev. Dr. Dominique Robinson, preaching
7pm: Jubilee Celebration in the Weeks Center
Join the community of Southwest for a worship experience and kickback highlighting and honoring Black culture. Attendees are invited to wear red, and those of African ancestry are asked to wear heritage attire. Though not the first day of the month, this celebration marks the beginning of a joyous celebration of Black History Month on the campus of Seminary of the Southwest. Our Assistant Professor of Preaching, the Rev. Dr. Dominique A. Robinson will preach. After the service, attendees will enjoy a community meal of heavy hors d’oeuvres with music, games, and cultural expression.

Feast of Absalom Jones

The Rev. Absalom Jones (1746-1818) was America’s first black priest. He was an African-American abolitionist and founded the Free African Society with Richard Allen in 1787, a mutual aid society for African Americans in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. You can find out more about Jones here.
Celebrate Black Austin – East Austin Walking Tour

In celebration of Black History Month, Third Spaces has invited us to join their special event on February 22nd! Founded by alumni Jane Obi and her husband Bryan, Third Spaces will be hosting a block party and guided walking tours to honor Black history and culture in Austin.
Recommended Tour: Jane and Bryan will lead the first tour at 10 AM, and they encourage members of the SSW community to sign up for this one.

Cole Arthur Riley is a writer and poet. She is the NYT bestselling author of This Here Flesh and Black Liturgies. Her writing has been featured in The Atlantic, Guernica, The Boston Globe, and The Washington Post.
Cole is also the creator of Black Liturgies, a space that integrates spiritual practice with Black emotion, Black literature, and the Black body; and a project of The Center for Dignity and Contemplation where she serves as Curator.

Anna Julia Haywood Cooper (1858-1964) was an Episcopal educator and author from Raleigh, North Carolina. She was one of the most prominent African-American scholars in U.S. history and is often referred to as the “Mother of Black Feminism”. You can read more about Cooper here.
