Seminary of the Southwest announced recently that at its upcoming commencement exercises – the 71st commencement exercises for the Episcopal seminary – it will award honorary doctorates of divinity to the Rt. Rev. John Smylie and the Rev. Canon Anthony Guillén. Further, Southwest announced that the commencement address will be given by the Rt. Rev. Daniel Gutiérrez , Bishop of Pennsylvania.
Important advocates for both the seminary and the church overall, Smylie and Guillén will both be presented their degrees, honoris causa, at the commencement ceremony on May 25, 2022. Smylie, the retired Bishop of Wyoming, has been an instrumental partner for the Iona Collaborative early in the that programs existence, and served on the seminary’s Board of Trustees. Guillen is the current Missioner for Latino/Hispanic Ministries for The Episcopal Church and has contributed significantly to Southwest’s Latinx Studies program for many years. He is also a graduate from Seminary of the Southwest.
“It is a joy to be honoring Anthony and John at this year’s commencement,” said the Very Rev. Cynthia Briggs Kittredge, Dean and President. “Anthony is a longtime friend and has advised and collaborated with me and the seminary over many years. He has advanced the church’s ministry with his steady, faithful, eloquent advocacy. Since I first knew John when he was in seminary, he has been a creative, bright light, and unique evangelist. The seminary’s partnership with John and the diocese of Wyoming has been lifegiving.”
The Commencement exercises for the Seminary of the Southwest Class of 2022 will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd on May 25, 2022 at 10am. The will also be a Holy Eucharist service the evening before in Christ Chapel. For more information, please click here.
