In this day of theological education, Hispanic pastors and church leaders will explore the transformative power of the miracles of God as performed by Jesus Christ in the midst of meagerness and abundance, the borderland of the Roman Empire and the Kin*dom of God. We will reflect on the significance of reenacting the miracles of God in the everyday struggles of Hispanic natives and new immigrants in the US borderlands. The miracles will be examined in light of the cultural and historical context of the Roman Empire to understand their transcendence as manifestations of the Kin*dom of God proclaimed by Jesus.
There are two presenters at this workshop. Both presentations will be provided in Spanish.
Dr. Leticia Guardiola-Sáenz, Assistant Professor of Christian Scriptures, School of Theology and Ministry, Seattle University
Born and raised in the borderlands of Mexico and the United States, Dr. Leticia Guardiola-Sáenz uses her bicultural experience as interpretive lens to read the New Testament. Her academic and pedagogical interests are on contextual reading strategies such as postcolonial and cultural hermeneutics, feminist and borderlander interpretations of the Gospels for today, and cultural representations of Jesus as ministerial models. Guardiola-Sáenz has several publications that have appeared in various books and journals. Recently she co-edited the book The Peoples’ Companion to the Bible, and is currently working on a feminist-cultural interpretation of The Letters of John, for the Wisdom Bible Commentary series. A member of the American Baptist Churches USA, she has been actively involved in ministry both in Mexico and the United States. Before joining the faculty at Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry in 2008, she taught at the Drew University and Andover Newton Theological School.
Dr. Gregory Cuéllar, Assistant Professor of Old Testament, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary
Dr. Cuéllar joined the faculty of Austin Seminary as Assistant Professor of Old Testament in January 2012. He previously held adjunct teaching appointments at Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University and Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist, and has also served as visiting professor of Old Testament at Seminario Metodista Juan Wesley in Monterrey, Mexico. A native of Cuero, Texas, he earned a Bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University, Kingsville; the Master of Divinity degree with a concentration in Biblical Languages from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth; and the Ph.D. in Biblical Interpretation/Hebrew Bible from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University. Dr. Cuéllar brings a passion for scripture and transmits a love for the church in his teachings. If he were not an Old Testament professor, he would be pastoring at a Latino/a immigrant church somewhere in the urban United States.
