Triduum 2019

April 18, 2019 - April 20, 2019

The Seminary of the Southwest community invites you to join us in celebrating the Passion, death, and Resurrection of our Lord during the three concluding days of Holy Week.

All services are held in Christ Chapel on the campus of Seminary of the Southwest unless otherwise noted.

Tenebrae
Wednesday, April 17  |  7:00 p.m.
Weeks Center Rotunda

Latin for “darkness” or “shadows,” a quiet service of prayer combining the monastic morning offices of Matins and Lauds in anticipation of the day to come, structured around psalms, readings, and responsories, with a gradual extinguishing of light.

Maundy Thursday Holy Eucharist
Thursday, April 18  |  5:30 p.m.
Maundy Thursday dinner to follow, Knapp Dining Hall (RSVP here)

The beginning of the Holy Triduum, this service celebrates the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper and includes the washing of the feet. The altar is stripped at the conclusion of the service and the people depart in silence.

The Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday
Friday, April 19  |  11:45 a.m.

A quiet, solemn service commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, including the reading of the Passion, solemn intercessions, and veneration of the cross. The Eucharist is not celebrated.

Holy Saturday Liturgy
Saturday, April 20  |  11:45 a.m.

A simple service with readings and prayers, recalling the day Christ visited among the dead, while his body lay in the tomb, and awaiting the Resurrection.

The Great Vigil of Easter
Saturday, April 20  |  8:00–10:00 p.m.
Easter Gala to follow, Knapp Dining Hall (RSVP here)

The climax of the Triduum and of the liturgical year, this beautiful, prolonged sung service celebrates the Resurrection of Christ and includes the Service of Light (kindling of new fire to symbolize the light of Christ returning to the world, lighting the Paschal candle); the Service of Lessons (where we read sacred stories of how God has moved in all of history); Baptism and the Renewal of Baptismal Vows; and the First Eucharist of Easter.
