Hispanic Heritage Celebrated at Southwest

 
October is Hispanic Heritage Month, and Seminary of the Southwest celebrated with a series of events, visitors and art displays throughout the campus.
The Very Rev. Miguelina Howell, Dean of Christ Church Cathedral, Hartford, CT, was the keynote speaker and spoke in Knapp Auditorium on October 25th. Prior to her appointment as the Tenth Dean, Miguelina served as Vicar of the Cathedral.    She is a member of the Episcopal Church Latino/Hispanic Ministries Council of Advice, member of the Board of the Society for the Increase of Ministry and was appointed to serve on the General Convention 2015  Task Force on Sustentability and Development of Latino/Hispanic Ministries.
While October 27 saw a rare cold spell in Austin and forced the festivities inside, Soul in the City joined the Hispanic Heritage Celebration with a concert from Leti Garza. Widely praised for presenting retro-vogue Latin classics, Leti’s 2012 album La Americana was featured on Public Radio International’s The World and was on the ballot for Best Tropical Latin Album in the 55th Grammy Awards. Her new album, El Unica Para Mi, spans three languages and the rhythmic borders of son, danzon, cha cha cha, cumbia, salsa, merengue, and heartfelt bolero. Full of vitality and movement, the album aims to forge connections and inspire action.
The Very Rev. Cynthia Briggs Kittredge reflected, “On a cold night, the Weeks Center was bright with sparkling lights. Leti Garza’s beautiful voice held the room entranced. Children and couples danced. Leti shared the spiritual foundation of her music in the interview with Al Rodriguez. It was a memorable night!”
From October 16 to November 2, 2017, a Latino Art Display was installed in the Weeks Center and on November 2, 2017, Bishop Hector Monterroso from the Diocese of Texas joined the All Souls Day Evening Eucharist, and at the celebration that evening.
Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual event at Seminary of the Southwest, and all events are open to the public.
