John Hines Day Provides Poignant Celebration of Founder

On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, the community of Seminary of the Southwest gathered for the annual celebration of its founder, the Rt. Rev. John E. Hines. The midday Eucharist in Christ Chapel on Seminary of the Southwest campus, was followed with a celebratory lunch following in the Howell Dining Hall.

The community was honored with the presence of the Rt. Rev. Carlye J. Hughes, Bishop of the Diocese of Newark, as preacher, and the Rt. Rev. Kathryn M. Ryan, Bishop Suffragan, Diocese of Texas, as presider. In attendance were members of the Board of Trustees, several members of the John Hines Legacy Society, and members of the Hines family as well.

“John Hines Day is always a wonderful gathering of friends and supporters of Southwest,” said the Very Rev. Cynthia Briggs Kittredge, dean and president. “Being reminded each year of Bishop Hines’ vision of a seminary for the whole church is a blessing. Hearing Bishop Hughes’ call to our current students to claim the gifts God has given them, and to follow their own visions was inspiring.”
