On Saturday, September 22, 2018, the Very Rev. Cynthia Briggs Kittredge, dean and president, was commissioned as canon theologian at Southwark Cathedral in the Diocese of Southwark in London.
In her new role, Kittredge will assist the clergy and people of the Diocese of Southwark in theological reflection, conversation, and decision-making through written materials, workshops, debates, and preaching. Kittredge preached at her commissioning, and again twice on the following Sunday.
“As a diocese blessed with diversity and set in a global city,” said the Very Rev. Andrew Nunn, dean of Southwark, of the canon theologian program, “we wish to read the scriptures and engage with theology through the eyes and minds of others from around the Anglican Communion.”
At Southwark, Kittredge joins three other canon theologians from across that Communion: Esther Mombo from Kenya, Samson Fan from Hong Kong and Paul Shaibu Katampu from Ghana.
“Cynthia’s commissioning as canon theologian was an honor not only for her but for our whole community,” said Dr. Scott Bader-Saye, acting dean and president. “We celebrate with her the extension of her ministry into a new setting. In addition, her presence in the Diocese of Southwark means that other parts of the communion will come to know something of the gifts Southwest has to offer the church.”
Kittredge is on sabbatical this fall from Seminary of the Southwest and will return in January 2019.
