Seminary of the Southwest is excited to congratulate the Rev. Angela Maria Cortiñas on her election on October 19th as Bishop Suffragan in the Diocese of West Texas. She is the second Latina elected as Bishop in The Episcopal Church and the third Latina Bishop.
“This is a wonderful day for the church and a wonderful affirmation of our alumna, Angela Cortiñas,” said Dr. Scott Bader-Saye, dean and president. “Angela brings wisdom, skill, and care to her ministry and will be a gift to the people of the Diocese of West Texas. We are sorry to lose her as a near neighbor of the seminary, but we are happy that the wider church will benefit from her leadership.”
The Rev. Cortińas received her Master of Divinity from Southwest in 2010, and will be consecrated and installed as the seventh bishop suffragan of West Texas on March 15, 2025, pending consents of bishops with jurisdiction and Standing Committees of Episcopal Church diocese.
