The Rev. Canon Lisa Hines to receive Hal Brook Perry Award

The Rev. Canon Lisa Hines

Seminary of the Southwest recently announced that this year’s Hal Brook Perry award recipient will the Rev. Canon Lisa Hines. The Hal Brook Perry Award is conferred upon a graduate of Seminary of the Southwest who exemplifies exceptional ministry to parishes, dioceses, and/or specific communities or ministries – locally, regional, or worldwide.

The Rev. Canon Hines will be presented the award at a dinner held during the Blandy Lectures and Alumni Convocation on November 7, 2019.

As rector of Calvary Church in Bastrop, she cared for her congregation after the Bastrop fire in 2011. Lisa lost her home and all of its contents during the fire. The Rt. Rev. Dena Harrison offered to find priests to step in and serve so that she could take some time to recover, but Lisa felt that she needed to be with her church through the process of recovery. She is a poet and writer who knows the power of words to heal, to change hearts, to lift spirits and move people toward Christ.

In 2018, she was named to succeed the Rev. Carol Petty as Canon for Wellness and Pastoral Care and Safeguarding Minister. The Canon for Wellness and Care/Safeguarding Minister empowers the establishment and nurture of environments of health, safety and mutual care across the Diocese of Texas.  Wellness and Care includes the ministries of clergy and congregational wellness, Safeguarding, pastoral care and recovery ministries. The Safeguarding Ministry supports Safeguarding compliance among EDOT’s parishes, school and institutions.

“Lisa Hines has been a good friend of the seminary and close friend of mine for many years. The Hal Brook Perry Award was created to celebrate and honor Southwest graduates who exemplify exceptional ministry, and Lisa is an inspirational example of doing just that. I am delighted that she will receive this year’s award,” said the Very Rev. Cynthia Briggs Kittredge, dean and president.
