On a picture perfect Saturday morning on November 11, the Seminary of the Southwest Thuri-Bulls lost a close Polity Bowl to Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary 26-20.
After Presby jumped out to a fast 14-0 lead in the opening minutes, Senior Captain Brian Prall rallied the Anglicans with 2 touchdown passes to Junior Laurent De Prins, as the Thuri-Bull defense stymied the Presby offense for the rest of the game. Senior Nick Earl intercepted an extra-point try, returning it the full length of the field for the single point. Another late interception by Earl as Presby tried to run out the clock gave the Thuri-Bulls one last chance, but ‘hail-mary’ efforts fell short, as Presby hung on to win.
“Every year the Polity Bowl arouses our students’ athletic and competitive spirits,” shared The Very Rev. Cynthia Brigg Kittredge, Dean and President. “It is also a time of cooperation and community building under the leadership of the talented coaches. I am very proud of the Thuri-Bulls and their faithful fans.”
The Polity Bowl is a flag football game played each year between Seminary of the Southwest and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. This tradition extends back over 40 years, and is key event in building fellowship between these two major seminaries located just down the road from each other.
Next year’s Polity Bowl will be played the same weekend that many alumni will be visiting for the Blandy Lecture and Alumni Convocation.
