“The Mighty One, God, The Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to 
where it sets.” – Psalm 50:1.
This psalm is often understood as a psalm of admonition, calling humanity to account in preparation for the coming of Christ. In today’s context we may consider this psalm, with its powerful references to earth and its creatures, as a reminder of our stewardship for God’s creation. Indeed, we are called to account in our caring for this magnificent and breathtaking planet and all its gifts.
During a season in which we traditionally bring trees, greenery, and beautiful boughs of all sorts into our homes, let us be mindful of our stewardship responsibilities to the extraordinary natural world we inhabit. Perhaps take an extra moment to look – really look – at the natural beauty around us. Sometimes it is through closer examination of and appreciation of earth’s physical, touchable, smell-able, seeable beauty, that indeed we find the divine.
Lord, we give praise for your creation! Give us strength and wisdom to protect what you have so lovingly entrusted to us.
